Nugget 1
What Is Nuggets?
I have jumped head first into the world of specialty foods in the last several years, and have learned a lot from the industry as a cheesemonger and voracious reader. I am one of those weirdo cheese nerds. Like many of my fellow turophiles (cheese lovers) I often seek out new cheeses to try, and keep a detailed log of tasting notes and impressions on every cheese I encounter. I am willing to call myself an expert in the field of cheese, but I’m a ways away from mastery. I have a good understanding of the field, with a lot of detailed, obsessive knowledge, but still have a beginner’s enthusiasm, because I know that there’s still so much for me to learn about and experience. I have cracked open many Parmigiano Reggiano wheels, but I have never tasted a real, raw milk Brie de Meaux.
In “Nuggets” I intend to speak from what I do know about cheese and the specialty food industry, as well as what I know about woodworking for those who might be interested. In the Pacific Northwest, nature is our backdrop. It’s not an unusual thing here to find someone like myself who delights in working with wood, and who is inspired by the beauty in nature. Though everyone has the ability to appreciate this beauty in their own way, not everyone has the skills (or tools) necessary to work with a natural art medium like wood to create things with their own hands. In Nuggets I can give readers a little advice on how to get started making things, what resources might be necessary, and hopefully teach people to work with the wood, not fight it to make it something it doesn’t want to be, but enable it to express itself the way it should.
One thing that has permeated my life, from my late teens to now (age number to remain undisclosed – there’s a picture of me on the About page, so you take a guess as to that number), is teaching. I have been a teacher of traditional Chinese martial arts for a long time, and a homeschool teacher of my two children, now each graduated from college, about whom I will try not to brag too much in this blog. I will use Nuggets to continue that calling, and teach my readers a thing or two about what I’ve picked up in the world of cheese and woodworking (I think that this might not be the best forum for discussing martial arts). And so, that’s Nuggets. I hope you enjoy it, and share it with a friend who you think might like it too.
